What (counter)culture are we creating?
I was there recently — on the edge of disbelief and skepticism. That quiet what’s the point type of fatigue. Feeling the heartbreak and frustration of the challenges of our times.
I had to practice very consciously to return to my centre of purpose, and reconnect with my capacity for vision. To reframe the crisis we’re living through as an opportunity to imagine, and build, a future I actually want to live in.
It was necessary to tune out the mainstream to sharpen my senses.
I deleted Instagram from my phone for nine months, so I could assess the micro-systems I’m part of without the distortion of comparison or the obsession over growth.
To remind myself of the very human – yet meaningful – piece I bring into the spaces I walk. To cultivate a renewed sense of “strategic hope” that transforms uncertainty into possibility.
Because this is the culture we live in: brutal and beautiful, dark and luminous. All unfolding at once.
And the work we do in the world is in constant conversation with the reality we share.
We’re the creators of culture
Amidst war, ecological decline, political instability, and excessive technology pulling us off course, our hearts still hold a vision of something potent and beautiful — even if we need to do a little digging to find its true pulse.
When I looked closely at my body of work, I began to see the golden thread running through the choices, the projects, the people I’ve worked with.
Discovering our own unique thread may be one of the most fulfilling acts of service — to ourselves and the world.
As we tend the soil of our lives and honour the desires of the soul, we often find ourselves meeting a collective need for exactly what we’re here to offer.
That’s what real development is: becoming more fully ourselves in ways that genuinely serve the world.
So I ask you —
What’s the vision you keep returning to?
What counter-culture are you helping to shape?
Do you dare to dedicate yourself to it?
With love,
